Pumping and storing breast milk: how long does it keep?
Pumping lets someone else feed your baby and makes it easier to return to work. Fresh breast milk keeps safely for a limited time, so good routines and clear labelling matter.
Safe storage times
As a general guide for healthy, full-term babies: freshly expressed milk keeps up to about 4 hours at room temperature, up to around 3-4 days in the fridge (at the back, not the door), and up to about 6 months in the freezer. Always follow local health authority advice.
Label containers with the date and the time, and use the oldest milk first. Store in small portions of 60-120 ml to reduce waste.
Thawing and warming
Thaw frozen milk in the fridge overnight or in a bowl of lukewarm water. Do not use a microwave, as it creates hot spots. Use thawed milk within 24 hours and do not refreeze it. Swirl gently if the milk has separated.
Pumping tips
Wash your hands and clean pump parts after each use. Relax, think of your baby or look at a photo to help let-down, and use warmth or gentle breast massage. Pump around the times your baby usually feeds.
If you pump at work, plan breaks, a private space and a place to keep milk cold. Read our guide to breastfeeding leave in Norway for your right to time off.
Track how much your baby needs
Babies typically take 60-120 ml per bottle depending on age. Logging feedings and pumped volume in Plumpy helps you see patterns and know how much to leave with the caregiver.
